Manuel Antonio is small but its trails pack in rainforest, beaches and cliff-top ocean views. Here’s a complete guide to the Manuel Antonio Park trails and what you’ll see on each.

Main Trail (Sendero Principal)

The wide, flat, easy entry trail — partly paved and wheelchair-accessible. It’s where most wildlife is spotted: sloths, capuchin and squirrel monkeys, toucans and iguanas. Distance: ~1.3 km to the beaches.

Difficulty: Easy · Best for: everyone, families, wildlife

Punta Catedral Loop

A scenic loop around the forested peninsula that was once an island. Expect stairs and shade, with stunning lookout points over the Pacific.

Difficulty: Moderate · Length: ~1.4 km loop · Best for: views, fitter hikers

The beaches: Espadilla Sur & Playa Manuel Antonio

The two famous park beaches sit on either side of the Punta Catedral isthmus — calm, white-sand and perfect for a post-hike swim. Keep an eye on your belongings: monkeys and raccoons are bold.

Waterfall & secondary trails

Quieter side trails lead to a small waterfall and viewpoints, great for birdwatching away from the crowds.

Trail tips from a local guide

  • Go early (7:00 AM) for the best wildlife and cooler temperatures.
  • The park is closed Tuesdays; open 7 AM–4 PM otherwise.
  • No food allowed inside — pack water and snacks for after.
  • The animals are camouflaged: a guide with a telescope spots what you’d walk right past. See our wildlife guide.
