The right gear makes a hot, humid rainforest day comfortable. Here’s exactly what to wear and pack for Manuel Antonio National Park, from a local guide.
What to wear
- Light, breathable clothing — quick-dry shirt and shorts
- Comfortable walking shoes or sandals with grip (trails can be damp)
- Swimsuit underneath — the park beaches are worth it
- A hat and sunglasses
What to pack
- Sunscreen (reef-safe) and insect repellent
- Water — stay hydrated; there’s a kiosk inside but bring your own
- Camera or phone for the wildlife
- Small dry bag to protect electronics from sudden rain
- Cash (colones) for parking or the kiosk
What’s NOT allowed
- 🚫 No outside food (drinks like water and soda are fine)
- 🐾 No pets
- 🚁 No drones
These rules protect the wildlife — monkeys quickly learn to steal food, which harms them.
Pro tips
- Arrive at 7:00 AM for the best wildlife and to beat the heat.
- Remember the park is closed Tuesdays.
- Keep bags zipped — raccoons and monkeys are notorious snack thieves.
- Bring binoculars if you have them, or join a guided tour with professional telescopes.
