How to book Manuel Antonio National Park (tickets + guide)

Booking Manuel Antonio has two separate pieces, and mixing them up is the most common mistake we see. The park entrance ticket is sold only through the official government system, SINAC’s online ticket portal, and it opens exactly two months before your visit date — not a day earlier, and never at the gate. The guide is a separate booking, made directly with us on WhatsApp, and it is not tied to the SINAC ticket window: you can lock in your guide today even if your park ticket window has not opened yet.

Skipping Step 1 to wait for the SINAC window is the actual reason people lose their December date — guides book out first, not tickets.

Why December is the best month to walk Manuel Antonio with a guide

Because December buys you dry mornings, and mornings are when the forest is working. The wildlife here is resident year-round — December is not a migration month and no month “has more animals” — but December is the transition out of the green season into Costa Rica’s driest stretch, and what changes is the walking and the light. Quepos averages about 249 hours of sunshine in December, against roughly 501 mm of rain spread over about 14 days, with highs near 27 °C (81 °F) and lows near 19 °C (66 °F) (weather-and-climate.com, Quepos station). The rain that does fall here usually arrives in the afternoon or evening. That is the whole reason our tours start early: you walk the trails in the good half of the day, and the month dries out further as it goes on.

What that means in practice: better light for the Swarovski scope, drier trails for the slow, quiet walking that finds sloths, and a canopy that is not roaring with rain while your guide is trying to point out a toucan. We will not promise you a specific animal — nobody honest can, wild animals are not on a schedule. What a certified naturalist changes is your odds and how much of what you pass you actually notice.

Prices for December 2026 and January 2027 — no high season surcharge

• Classic Group — $30 per person. ICT-licensed naturalist guide, group of up to 10, Swarovski spotting scope, free 4K photos and video. Park entrance and transport not included. For travellers who already have their park ticket and their own car.
• Premium — $65 per person. Group of up to 10 with everything handled: park entrance, round-trip hotel transport and a fresh fruit snack included.
• Classic Private — $69 per person. The same tour with the guide to yourselves and a flexible departure time. Entrance and transport not included.
• V.I.P. Private — $100 per person. Private guide, private round-trip transport, park entrance, snack, a traditional Costa Rican lunch and professional photography.

Park entrance, where it is not included, is $18.08 for adults and $5.65 for children aged 2 to 12 (children under 2 enter free; from 13 they pay the adult rate), set by SINAC and subject to change — confirm it when you buy. Two adults on the Classic Group in December should budget $30 + $18.08 each, plus their own transport and parking. What is actually available, day by day, in December 2026 and January 2027

Three hard constraints shape every December date, and they are the ones travellers find out too late:

• The park is closed on Tuesdays. In December 2026 that is the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th; in January 2027 it is the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th. • Park entry tickets can only be bought within two months of your date — not a day earlier (Manuel Antonio Park Online Services). For 28 December, that window opens at the end of October. For 5 January, early November. Tickets are sold online through the official SINAC system only, never at the gate. Travellers who try in August get nothing and conclude the park is full.
• New Year’s week, 31 December to 3 January, should be treated as gone by the end of November. It is the single highest-demand window of the Manuel Antonio year, and the one where people lose the date their whole trip was built around.

Every other day in the window is bookable, subject to the guide calendar — and the guide, not the ticket, is the scarcer resource in high season. There is a finite number of certified naturalists in Manuel Antonio and the good ones are committed weeks out. Group tours cap at 10 people; private tours take the day you choose with a flexible start time.

How much does a guide at the park entrance cost, and how do I hire a good one?

At the entrance you will be quoted roughly $20–25 per person, and you will have no way of knowing whether the man quoting it is certified. That gap is the whole reason this question shows up on TripAdvisor four separate times. Costa Rica issues ICT certification to naturalist guides; the shirt that says “official” at the gate does not. Our Classic Group is $30 per person with an ICT-licensed guide, a Swarovski spotting scope and your photos and video included — booked in advance, with a name attached to it and a receipt. The process to hire a good one is the boring one: book before you arrive, check the certification, and do not negotiate on the roadside at 7 a.m. with your family standing behind you.

Will the monkeys steal my backpack in Manuel Antonio?

They genuinely try, and in December — the busiest month — they try hardest, because more people means more food rewards. White-faced capuchins open zips, go through bags and will take food out of your hand on Playa Manuel Antonio; raccoons and coatis do the same. This is not a rare incident, it is the normal behaviour of animals that have learned humans carry lunch. What works: keep your bag closed and on you, never carry visible food, never feed them, and do not try to take something back from a capuchin. On a guided tour your guide runs interference on this all day, which is a bigger part of the job in high season than most visitors expect.

Can I see toucans and scarlet macaws in Manuel Antonio in December?

Toucans, yes — regularly, and December’s dry mornings are good conditions for spotting them in the canopy. Scarlet macaws are possible at the right spots rather than guaranteed in the park itself. Manuel Antonio holds over 350 bird species, and with a scope and someone who knows the perches you will see far more than you would alone. But if birds are the reason you are coming, be honest with us on WhatsApp and we will tell you straight whether the park is your best morning or whether one of our dedicated birdwatching tours fits your dates better. We would rather send you to the right forest than sell you the wrong one.

Are there crocodiles, and what about the Tárcoles bridge on the drive down?

The Tárcoles bridge is the most famous stop on the San José–Manuel Antonio drive and the crocodiles under it are real and large. Two practical warnings from travellers who have done it: the bridge carries heavy truck traffic, so watch children closely, and do not leave anything visible in your car while you are looking over the rail — vehicle break-ins at that pull-off are a recurring complaint. At Manuel Antonio itself, the beaches inside the park are not crocodile habitat; the estuaries and river mouths along the coast are a different matter, which is exactly why you swim where the rangers and your guide tell you to.

How long is the drive from San José airport, and how long does the park walk take?

Plan on roughly 3 to 4.5 hours from SJO to Manuel Antonio (route, bus, shuttle and parking in our guide to getting to Manuel Antonio National Park) depending on traffic, the Tárcoles stop and the weather — the wide range is honest, not evasive, and it is why “we’ll land at 4 p.m. and do the park the same day” rarely works. The park walk itself runs about 2 to 4 hours on a guided tour, which is the difference between covering ground and actually stopping at what your guide finds. Wear closed shoes with grip: December trails still get wet, and the main trail has roots and slope. If you arrive on the day of your tour, book an afternoon start and tell us your flight number.

What happens if I need to cancel a December booking?

Bookings for tours between 15 December and 15 January are not refundable at any time. Outside that window you get a full refund if you cancel 72 hours or more before the tour. We say it plainly rather than bury it, because the reason is concrete: in those weeks we buy park entrance tickets, boat spaces and ranger permits well in advance, and a seat released at the last minute cannot be resold. The one exception runs in your favour — if conditions on the water, on the mountain road or in the forest become genuinely unsafe, we reschedule or refund you in full, high season included. Does booking a private tour mean you will be alone in Manuel Antonio National Park?

No — private means the guide is yours alone, not the park. Manuel Antonio is a small park on a timed-entry system, so on a December morning you will pass other groups on the same trails no matter what you book. What a Classic Private ($69 per person) or V.I.P. Private ($100 per person) buys you is a flexible departure time, a guide who walks at your pace, and a scope that is never shared with strangers. A traveller who booked a private tour with us in March 2026 put it plainly on Tripadvisor: “Right before who thinks he’s private and alone in this park thinks wrong. We were surrounded by other groups but Jason is often away with us and has seen things no one else has seen. So we were often ‘alone’ with the great animals.” That is the honest version of what private buys in December.

What time do you meet your guide, and what happens if the time has to change?

Your meeting time is agreed in writing on WhatsApp before your date, and the meeting point is the park entrance. That WhatsApp message is your confirmation — not the booking email, not the hotel’s assumption. If anything about the time has to move, it is confirmed on that same thread. We say this because we have been called out on it: a guest in January 2026 wrote that they were told at 7:17 a.m. that the 7:00 a.m. start was actually 7:30 a.m., and that they would have eaten the breakfast they had already paid for. In a December week where every ticket is timed, the start time is the one detail worth re-reading the night before.

Do you get the guide’s photos and videos, and when?

Yes — free 4K photos and video are included in every Wakoo tour, at every price, and they are sent through the same WhatsApp thread you booked on. Your guide shoots through the Swarovski scope during the walk, which is the only way most people get a frame-filling shot of a sloth forty metres up. Guests mention the photos more than almost anything else in our reviews. It is also the thing to chase us about if it goes quiet: the same January 2026 review that flagged the start time also flagged a delay in receiving the promised pictures.

How crowded is Manuel Antonio in December and January, and does a guide help?

Busy — December to April is the park’s peak, and a guide does not empty the trail, it just changes where you stand on it. Two reviews from the same April week say both halves of this. One guest rated us five stars and wrote “MA was crazy crowded but Jason maneuvered us easily through and always found us a prime spot for viewing.” Another rated the experience badly and wrote “WAY too crowded, poorly run. Yes, we did see animals along with about 100 other people at any given spot… Just don’t come during peak season.” Both are real. If your dates are fixed by school holidays, the lever you still control is the hour: the first entry slot of the morning is emptier and the animals are more active than at 10 a.m.

How many people does Manuel Antonio National Park let in each day?

Roughly 2,500 visitors a day, sold as timed-entry tickets through SINAC, according to Earth Trekkers’ park guide. That cap is why “we’ll just buy a ticket at the gate” does not work here — there is no ticket booth at the entrance, and in the December–April peak the slots go 3 to 4 weeks ahead. It is also why the two-month SINAC purchase window matters: you cannot buy earlier than two months out, so the calendar decides for you. Book your guide first, then buy the ticket the day your window opens.

Can you swim at the park beaches after the walk?

Yes — the beaches inside the park are open and most guests swim right after the guided walk ends. Bring a swimsuit and a towel in your day bag; the walk finishes near the beach, so you do not have to hike back out to change plans. A guest in May 2025 wrote “Bring your bathing suits because the water is” — she was mid-sentence about the swim, and she is not the only one who wished someone had said it earlier. One caution stands: swim where the rangers and your guide point you, not at the river mouths and estuaries along the coast outside the park.

How far in advance should you book a Manuel Antonio tour for December 2026?

Book the guide today and buy the park ticket exactly two months before your date. Those are two separate bookings with two different deadlines, and that is the one thing travellers get wrong about December.

The guide has no booking window. You can reserve your spot with us right now for any date in December 2026 or January 2027, even one six months out. What runs out is us, not the calendar: in the December to April peak the good morning slots fill up 3 to 4 weeks ahead, and guides sell out before tickets do. The SINAC park entrance ticket is the opposite: it cannot be bought early. The government portal opens purchases exactly two months before your visit date, against a cap of roughly 2,500 timed-entry visitors a day, which is why availability is limited on the holiday dates. Concretely, for the dates people ask about most:

• December 24, 2026 → your SINAC ticket window opens October 24, 2026.
• December 25, 2026 → window opens October 25, 2026.
• December 31, 2026 → window opens October 31, 2026.
• January 1, 2027 → window opens November 1, 2026.

Nine dates cannot be booked at all, no matter how early you try: the park is closed every Tuesday — December 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29, and January 5, 12, 19 and 26. And if a date comes back sold out on the SINAC portal, it is the walk that is gone for that day, not the trip: tell us and we move you to the next morning or to the Manuel Antonio night tour, which runs on the private Sukia reserve and is open on those nine Tuesdays.

Booking early does not change the price: Classic Group $30, Premium $65, Classic Private $69 and V.I.P. Private $100 per person, with no December surcharge. Park entrance is $18.08 per adult and $5.65 for children aged 2 to 12, set by SINAC and paid separately. Booking early buys you the date and the departure time, not a discount.
