Playa Gemelas and Playa Escondida are the far beaches of Manuel Antonio National Park, past Punta Catedral – and the honest answer to “can we go?” is: only sometimes, and only after asking at the control point on the day. We are writing this page because several blogs and a few tour listings describe these two as a normal stop on a park visit, and they are not. They are not on the SINAC list for the main visitor circuit, access depends on trail conditions and on what the park is opening that season, and a visitor who builds a morning around reaching them can end up disappointed on a day that should have been excellent.
Along the coastline past Punta Catedral, beyond the two beaches the main trail delivers you to. Playa Gemelas – “the twins” – refers to a pair of small coves; Playa Escondida means “hidden beach”, which is a fair description of both the location and the likelihood of standing on it. Everything the main visitor flow of the park is built around – the control point, the wide main trail, the restrooms, the two swimming beaches – sits before this section. The park map page shows where the visitor circuit ends relative to the coast, which is the clearest way to see why these two are a different proposition from Playa Manuel Antonio and Playa Espadilla Sur.
Ask at the control point on the day, and accept the answer you get. This is not us being cautious for its own sake: the park manages which sections are open by season and by condition, and that decision is not published in a form a visitor can check in advance. Trail conditions in the green season differ from February. A blog post written in 2023 saying “we walked to Gemelas” tells you nothing about your Thursday. The only reliable source is the ranger at the control point when you walk in, and the only safe plan is one that is already a good morning if the answer is no.
That is also why no Wakoo Tours itinerary sells these two beaches as a destination. Promising a place whose access we cannot verify for your date would be selling you a maybe.
Build the morning around Playa Manuel Antonio and Playa Espadilla Sur, which are reliably open and 20 to 40 minutes from the control point. Playa Manuel Antonio is the sheltered cove where the water is usually calm enough for children and where the white-faced capuchins come down to the treeline. Playa Espadilla Sur is the wide beach on the other side of the Punta Catedral isthmus, better for walking and for finding shade late in the morning, and the crossing between the two broadens at low tide. Add the Punta Catedral loop and you have walked the most scenic ground in the park; the trails and beaches guide has the four trails with distance and difficulty so you can pick by fitness rather than by name.

Playa Biesanz and Playa Espadilla are outside the park; Gemelas and Escondida are inside it. That difference decides whether you need a ticket, whether you can go on a Tuesday, and what time you have to leave. Biesanz is a small sheltered beach reached from the road on the Punta Quepos side, and Espadilla is the long public beach in front of town – both free, both open when the park is closed, and neither one a substitute for a park visit. Food is not allowed inside the park, on any beach. The reason is the raccoons and the white-faced capuchins, which have learned that bags contain food and open them – zippers included – while their owner is in the water. Bring water only, eat before you enter or after you leave, and leave nothing in a beach bag that smells of food. Never feed them: a fed animal becomes the next visitor problem, and it is how bites happen.
The park closes every Tuesday and closes at 3:00 p.m. on open days. Nine Tuesdays: December 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29, 2026, and January 5, 12, 19 and 26, 2027. SINAC lists park hours as Wednesday to Monday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The nine closed dates in the high season are December 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29, 2026, and January 5, 12, 19 and 26, 2027 – 53 of the 62 days across those two months are open. Note the closing hour: 3:00 p.m., not 4:00 p.m. Several sites that rank for this question still publish the wrong one, and it matters most for anyone planning a late beach afternoon.
SINAC lists $18.08 for a foreign adult and $5.65 for a child aged 2 to 12, sold only through serviciosenlinea.sinac.go.cr – measured on 25 September 2026. Entry covers the open beaches; tickets are sold online only and the park enforces a daily entry cap at the control point, so in December and January buying the day before is not a safety margin.

None of them sells Playa Gemelas or Playa Escondida as a stop, for the reason above. What a guide does buy you is the sequencing – trails at 7:00 a.m., beach after 10:00 – and someone who already knows what the control point is opening this week.
