The scope is what turns a distant grey lump into an animal with a face, and in December it buys you distance rather than light. With 8.3 hours of sunshine a day the canopy is bright, so the limiting factor is no longer whether you can see the animal — it is how far away it is. A brown-throated three-toed sloth 30 metres up on the Sendero El Perezoso is a shape to the naked eye and, through the Swarovski ATX at 30–70×, an animal whose eyes, claws and breathing you can see, baby included if it is carrying one.
It also changes what a group gets from one sighting. One person with binoculars sees the sloth; a group queuing at a tripod-mounted scope all see the same sloth, which is the difference between being told there was a sloth and seeing it.
