What is the best time of day to see wildlife in Manuel Antonio?

7:00 AM to 9:30 AM. The park opens at 7:00 AM and the first two and a half hours are when monkeys move between trees, birds call, and coatis cross the trail. It is also the coolest part of the day and the trail is not yet crowded.

Why does the morning matter so much?

Because most of what people come to see is either warming up or feeding at that hour. Capuchin troops travel early. Toucans call at first light. Sloths — which sleep 15 to 20 hours a day — are more likely to be shifting position before the heat settles in. By late morning the forest goes quiet and the animals that are still visible are the ones that are asleep.

What happens at midday?

From roughly 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM the trail is hot, loud and full. Mammals are resting high in the canopy where you cannot see them without optics, and the beach is at its busiest. You can still have a good visit — but you are now on a beach walk with a rainforest backdrop, not a wildlife morning.

Is late afternoon any good?

Yes, second best. From about 3:00 PM until the park closes there is a second, shorter activity window as the heat drops. It is less reliable than the morning because you are racing the closing time, but the light for photographs is better.

What about at night?

Different animals entirely. The national park closes, but the forest around it comes alive with frogs, snakes, kinkajous, insects and sleeping birds you can approach. Does a guide actually change what I see?

At 7:00 AM, more than at any other hour. Early activity is mostly sound: a guide hears a troop or a toucan before you see anything, and the spotting scope turns a distant lump into a sloth’s face. How early should I leave my hotel?

Most Manuel Antonio and Quepos hotels are 10–20 minutes from the entrance. Leaving by 6:20 AM puts you at the gate before the line. If you are booked on a guided tour, hotel pickup handles it.

Does the season change the best hour?
