Which birdwatching tour should I pick near Manuel Antonio?

Four options run from Manuel Antonio and Quepos, and they are not interchangeable. Pick by what you want on your list:

Playa del Rey — what do you see there?

Coastal wetland and open country right beside Manuel Antonio: herons, kingfishers, raptors, and the waterbirds you will not find inside the rainforest trail. It is the shortest trip and the easiest to fit around a park morning. $125 per person.

Esquipulas — who is it for?

Inland from the coast, in the foothills behind Quepos. Different habitat means a different list: tanagers, trogons, woodcreepers and forest-edge species that do not come down to the beach. $135 per person.

Carara — is it worth the drive for macaws?

If scarlet macaws are on your list, yes. Carara National Park sits at the meeting point of the dry northwest and the wet south Pacific, and it holds one of the most reliable macaw populations in Costa Rica. It is a private tour and a longer day. $220 per person.

San Gerardo de Dota — the quetzal trip

A full-day climb into the cloud forest of the Talamanca highlands, the single best place in the country for the resplendent quetzal. Cold, early, and the most specific trip on this list. $265 per person.

Can I see birds inside Manuel Antonio National Park itself?

Yes — toucans, trogons, tanagers and raptors are regular on the main trail, and the Classic Group Tour at $30 per person includes a spotting scope. It is not a dedicated birding trip, but if you only have one morning it is the cheapest way to get a guide and optics on the birds.

What time do birding tours start?

Early — birds are loudest and most active in the first hours after dawn, the same window that works for mammals in the park. The reasoning is in best time of day to see wildlife in Manuel Antonio.

What should I bring?
