Manuel Antonio nature tours are guided walks led by a certified naturalist, and the honest answer to “which one should I book?” depends on three things only: whether you want to be inside the national park, whether you need hotel transport, and whether you want to share the guide. It is a 2-hour naturalist-guided walk, normally inside Manuel Antonio National Park, where an ICT-certified bilingual guide finds wildlife with a Swarovski spotting scope and shows it to you through the eyepiece. The scope is the whole point: a three-toed sloth is usually a grey lump 25 metres up, and without magnification you would keep walking. The guide also photographs and films through the scope and sends you the 4K files afterwards, included.
What separates a nature tour from just paying the entrance and walking in is not access — anyone can enter. It is detection. Guests who walk alone report a fraction of the sightings, because finding a camouflaged animal in a rainforest canopy is a trained skill, not an attentive one.

The park entrance is charged separately by the government: $18.50 for adults over 12, $5 plus IVA for children. It is not included in any option, on purpose — we do not mark it up.

Shared at $30 works when you are two flexible adults, you are already staying walking distance from the entrance, and you do not mind ten people around one scope. Private at $69 is worth it when you have children, a slow walker, a birder who wants to stop, or a photographer — because the pace becomes yours and the scope is never busy. The $39 difference between Classic and Classic Private buys you the guide’s full attention for two hours, which is the single biggest variable in how much you see.

Only if you are not staying in Quepos or Manuel Antonio, or if you are travelling with people who will not enjoy organising a 6:30 a.m. taxi. Premium at $65 and VIP Private at $100 include round-trip transport; Classic and Classic Private do not, and you meet the guide at the meeting point. Manuel Antonio National Park is open Wednesday to Monday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and closed every Tuesday. For the coming season the closed dates are December 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 of 2026, and January 5, 12, 19 and 26 of 2027. SINAC releases the calendar in a rolling window of about two months, so a December 2026 morning becomes purchasable around October 2026 and a January 2027 morning around November 2026. Every person in your group carries their own ticket. If the window for your date has not opened yet, WhatsApp us the date and we will tell you when it does.
The 7:00 a.m. opening. Between 7:00 and 9:00 the air is cooler, the animals are feeding and the trails are quiet — howler monkeys are calling and capuchins are moving. After midday the heat pushes mammals into the canopy and into stillness. This is not a sales line; it is the reason our first slot fills first.
The frequent list is sloths, white-faced capuchins and howler monkeys, followed by squirrel monkeys, agoutis, iguanas, raccoons, basilisks and a long bird list including toucans and trogons. We do not promise any single species. What we can say honestly is that a scope, a trained eye and an early start change the odds a great deal, and that most mornings deliver several of the animals on that list.
Two hours of guiding inside the park, around 2.5 hours door to door with transport, and 3 to 4 hours on VIP Private. The trails are dirt and roots with mild climbs; there is no technical section. You will be on your feet for two hours in humidity, so closed shoes, water and repellent matter more than fitness. There is no published minimum age, and families with young children walk it regularly.
Manuel Antonio is unusual among Costa Rican parks because it is small, coastal and densely populated with habituated wildlife, which means a two-hour walk here often produces more sightings than a full day in a larger, wilder park. If you have already done Corcovado or Monteverde, come for the density and the beaches at the end of the trail, not for the wilderness feeling — those are different products and Manuel Antonio is honest about being the accessible one.

Closed walking shoes are the one non-negotiable item: you will be on dirt and roots for two hours and sandals turn a good morning into a careful one. Add water, insect repellent, a hat and a light rain layer between May and November. Skip the heavy camera — the guide shoots through the Swarovski scope and sends you the 4K files, which is the only realistic way to photograph a sloth 25 metres up. Drones are not allowed inside the park. Swimwear is worth packing if you plan to stay on the park beaches after the guided part ends; the walk finishes near them, and your ticket lets you stay until 3:00 p.m.
The tour runs. This is rainforest, and a wet morning often reads better than a dry one because the temperature drops and animals stay active longer. The park itself only closes for genuinely unsafe conditions, which are rare. If we have to move a tour for safety, we move it to another day in your trip rather than cancelling it, and if no day works, you are not charged.
December and January are the two busiest months of the year here and the 7:00 a.m. slots go first.
