A Manuel Antonio wildlife tour is not the same product as a park entrance ticket, and the difference is the whole point of this page. The ticket gets you through the SINAC gate; the wildlife tour is the certified naturalist guide with a Swarovski spotting scope who finds the sloth forty metres up that you would have walked straight past. What a Manuel Antonio wildlife tour costs: the four prices and what each includes

Four options, and only two of them include the park entrance ticket — which is the single number people get wrong when they compare us against a marketplace listing.

The $30 group price has not moved and is not going to. The arithmetic that decides it for most travellers: add SINAC’s $18.50 adult entrance to the $30 tour and you are at $48.50 with your own car and your own parking problem, against $65 for the Premium with the ticket already bought and somebody else driving. What you actually see, and what nobody can promise you

Manuel Antonio holds three-toed and two-toed sloths, white-faced capuchins, howler monkeys, the endangered Central American squirrel monkey, coatis, raccoons, agoutis, basilisk lizards, iguanas and more than 350 bird species including toucans. On a normal morning walk a guided group sees sloths, at least two monkey species and a long list of birds and reptiles. What we will not do is print a guarantee: these are wild animals on no schedule, and any operator promising you a specific species is selling you something they do not control. The best hour of the day for wildlife, and why we start at 7:00 a.m.

The gate opens at 7:00 a.m. and the large bus groups from San José plus the cruise transfers land between 9:00 and 10:30 a.m. — which is also the hour the sloths and howlers go quiet in the heat. The first ninety minutes after opening are simultaneously the emptiest trails and the most active animals of the day. That is not a marketing line, it is why every departure time we publish is built backwards from the opening bell. Sloths: why the scope is the whole difference

Sloths are the animal almost everybody comes for and the one most people miss on their own. They sit still, high, and the colour of the branch they are on. A Swarovski spotting scope turns a grey smudge in the canopy into a frame-filling view of a three-toed sloth’s face, and your guide puts your phone on the eyepiece so you leave with the photograph too. A traveller with binoculars finds sloths occasionally; a traveller with a guide who works this forest every week finds them on most mornings.

The nine Tuesdays the park is closed in December 2026 and January 2027

Manuel Antonio National Park closes every Tuesday. For this season that removes 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 December 2026 and 5, 12, 19 and 26 January 2027. No operator can get you inside on those dates — if someone offers, they are not taking you into the national park. Hours the rest of the week are 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with last entry at 3:00 p.m., taken from the official SINAC schedule and checked on 25 September 2026. The two-month SINAC ticket window and the $18.50 entrance fee

SINAC sells park tickets online roughly two months ahead, so the date you want may simply not exist yet when you start planning — that is a sales window, not a sold-out park. The entrance is $18.50 per adult and $5.65 per child aged 2 to 12, children under 2 free, from 13 the adult rate. Practically: lock the guide and the date with us now, then buy the ticket the morning its window opens, because December to April is when the daily cap actually bites. Group, private or premium: which wildlife tour fits your group

If you already have your park ticket and a car, take the $30 Classic Group. If you want the day handled end to end, the $65 Premium is the one most families book. If you are photographing, travelling with small children or with someone who walks slowly, pay for private — $69 Classic Private or $100 V.I.P. — because the real thing you are buying is a pace nobody else sets. Note that the $69 private sits above the $65 premium on purpose: one sells exclusivity, the other sells convenience.

What to bring on a Manuel Antonio wildlife tour

Closed shoes with grip — the main trail has roots and slope and stays damp even in the dry season. Water, a hat, reef-safe sunscreen and insect repellent applied before you arrive. A swimsuit and towel, because the walk finishes near Playa Manuel Antonio and most guests swim afterwards. Leave the drone and the single-use plastic at the hotel; both are prohibited. And keep your bag closed: the capuchins open zips, and that is normal behaviour here, not a rare incident.

Tuesday, or after dark: the wildlife tours that run when the park does not

The park being shut on Tuesday does not mean no wildlife that day. Book the guide and the date with us first, because the certified guide and the 7:00 a.m. slot are the scarce part, then buy the ticket the morning its window opens. Do I need a guide to see wildlife in Manuel Antonio, or can I go in alone?

You can walk in alone with just a ticket, and many people do and see very little. Sloths sit still, high and camouflaged; most of the park’s wildlife is found by someone who knows the specific trees and the hour. The honest version: a guide does not make the park better, it makes the same two hours yield several times more sightings, plus the scope photographs you cannot take with a phone.

Is the night wildlife tour better than the daytime park tour?

They are different forests, not better and worse. The daytime park tour gives you sloths, monkeys, the beaches and the 350-plus bird list. The night tour gives you red-eyed tree frogs, kinkajous, snakes and insects that simply are not visible by day, and it runs on Tuesdays when the park is closed. Travellers with three days here usually do both; travellers with one morning should do the park.
