Why the Damas estuary is special
The Damas estuary, just north of Quepos, is a protected maze of channels where three species of mangrove grow side by side: red, black and white. Biologists call mangroves the nursery of the sea — fish, crustaceans and birds all raise their young among the flooded roots, which is exactly why the wildlife density here is so high. Because the whole ecosystem breathes with the ocean, departures are tide-dependent: the boat enters the channels when the water level is right, which is also when the animals are most visible along the exposed roots and banks.
Boat vs kayak — which is right for you
You can explore the Damas mangroves by boat or by kayak. The covered boat is the relaxed option: shaded, stable and comfortable, ideal for families with kids or grandparents, and the best platform for photography — you can stand up, swap lenses and follow the guide’s laser focus on wildlife instead of your paddle. Kayaking is a more active experience and fun if you want a workout, but for wildlife spotting and photos, the mangrove boat tour from Manuel Antonio is the option most travelers choose.

Manuel Antonio National Park closes every Tuesday.
