Life between
the roots.

Your ICT-certified guide reads the mangrove like a book, spotting wildlife you would never find alone. Round-trip transport from your hotel is included. Please bring your own water bottle, already filled — we do not provide water on this tour.

What the mangroves may reveal

The mangroves
after dark.

Explore the Damas mangrove channels after dark. The nighttime photographs here show a kingfisher at rest, a boa on a branch and a glass frog among the leaves. Your guide helps you look closely at the estuary’s nighttime life; wildlife sightings vary on every departure.

The Damas estuary

The nursery
of the sea.

Why the Damas estuary is special

The Damas estuary, just north of Quepos, is a protected maze of channels where three species of mangrove grow side by side: red, black and white. Biologists call mangroves the nursery of the sea — fish, crustaceans and birds all raise their young among the flooded roots, which is exactly why the wildlife density here is so high. Because the whole ecosystem breathes with the ocean, departures are tide-dependent: the boat enters the channels when the water level is right, which is also when the animals are most visible along the exposed roots and banks.

Boat vs kayak — which is right for you

You can explore the Damas mangroves by boat or by kayak. The covered boat is the relaxed option: shaded, stable and comfortable, ideal for families with kids or grandparents, and the best platform for photography — you can stand up, swap lenses and follow the guide’s laser focus on wildlife instead of your paddle. Kayaking is a more active experience and fun if you want a workout, but for wildlife spotting and photos, the mangrove boat tour from Manuel Antonio is the option most travelers choose.

A perfect plan for Tuesdays

Manuel Antonio National Park closes every Tuesday. If your trip lands on one, this Damas Island mangrove tour is the best alternative in the area: a completely different ecosystem from the park, full of wildlife, and no entrance lines. Many guests actually plan it this way on purpose — park on one day, mangroves on Tuesday.

What’s included

Every option includes about 2 hours on the mangrove canals with an ICT-certified naturalist guide on the boat, round-trip hotel transport. Please bring your own water bottle, already filled — we do not provide water on this tour. Gratuities / tips are not included. Choose a shared departure, or take the whole boat privately for your group at a flexible pace for photos — all the details are in the tour options above.

Jason showed us through the nighttime Mangrove tour and did a great job pointing out difficult to see creatures as well as educating us about the area. We totally support him as he moves to start his own tour company! You're looking for a friendly and fun guide that will take the time to make sure you see details. Jason is the guy for you.

Spent the morning/afternoon doing a private tour of Manuel Antonio. Not only was he able to spot things other guides and tourists were walking right by, but he was able to tell us about everything we saw. Helped our daughter find birds in her book and check them off as we found them. Later that day, we were picked up by Jason and we went on a Private Mangrove Tour. This was one of the coolest things we have ever done. We found lizards, birds, crabs and all sorts of things. Spotlight on the boat made it easy to see everything they were showing us. If i am ever lucky enough to return, this will be the first thing i book.
